Anniyan (Aparichithudu in Telugu; Aparichit in Hindi) is a high-budget 2005 Tamil movie. It was the first Indian movie to be dubbed into French and then released worldwide in French-speaking countries. Columbia Tristar had recently acquired the French dubbing rights. The film was a mega-blockbuster playing for 240 days in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and 150 days in Kerala. Furthermore, Anniyan was dubbed to Hindi as Aparichit, though it didn't make a success mostly because of the bad dubbing(from "Now I want to watch Anniyan. Aparichit could have been a super entertainer, but the disastrous dubbing robs the film of its flavor, reducing it to a merely enjoyable watch.

The movie stars the actors Vikram, Prakash Raj, Sadha, and Vivek. The film is directed by S. Shankar of Gentleman fame. The score and soundtrack, composed by Harris Jayaraj, was released on April 27, 2005. The motion picture took over two years to complete (2003–2005). The film was the most expensive Tamil feature film made of the year, costing INR 263,800,000.

Anniyan is the story of Ramanujam "Ambi" Iyengar (Vikram), a brahmin lawyer who suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder. Ambi is an innocent and honest lawyer. If he comes across anyone not obeying the rules he files cases against them but all his efforts go in vain.

His constant habit to be perfect in rules and honesty leads him to develop a Multiple Personality Disorder in which a new character in him grows as anniyan (stranger) and starts a website called to hear people's complaints. This anniyan is a violent man and the Ambi in him whenever he comes across a person who does not obey rules he makes complaints in his website. When he is Anniyan, he goes and kills them by methods used for torturing people in hell. He apparently takes the definition of these methods from the Garuda Purana.

During the first half, Anniyan kills 3 different people due to their actions:

* A man who did not stop to save a person in critical condition. Anniyan forces a herd of buffaloes to stampede him to death. He calls this murder "Anthakoopam", a Sanskrit word and one of the punishments in the Garuda Purana.
* A chef who fails to provide decent food for railway passengers. Anniyan tosses him into a pot and frys him to death. This punishment is called "Kumbhipakam". The chef was the brother of DCP Prabhakar (Prakash Raj) and the death caused Prabhakar to rise with anger, promising to kill his brother's murderer when he is found.
* A factory owner who makes faulty motor parts. He sends a group of thugs to kill Ambi, but this triggers Anniyan, who knocks out all the men. Later, Anniyan ties the owner to a tree and dumps leeches onto his body. This punishment is called "Krimiibhojanam"

Meanwhile, DCP Prabhakar and Chari (Vivek), a friend of Ambi, are after the murderers.

Ambi is in love with his neighbor Nandhini (Sadha). After she rejects him, Ambi develops another personality, a ramp walk model named Remo. Nandhini instantly falls for Remo and his tricks.

Later, Nandhini acquires land, but tries to cheat the government out of taxes. Ambi chooses not to help her, but when Nadhini tells Remo, Anniyan takes over and goes after her. Just as Anniyan is about to toss her into a pit of fire, Anniyan reverts back to Ambi. He is admitted to a hospital where he is diagnosed with a multiple personality disorder. It is at this hospital that Ambi reveals a dark secret from his past when he is hypnotized. When he was a young boy, corruption and incompetence in the police force and elsewhere had resulted in the death of his sister. After listening to this story, the doctor (Nassar) concludes that the death of Ambi's sister resulted in the development of the psychological disorder. According to the doctor, Remo will cease to exist only if Nandhini accepts Ambi's love. However, Anniyan will cease to exist only when the country is reformed. Nandhini eventually accepts Ambi's love and Remo disappears.

Ambi is finally caught and is sentenced to two years of psychological treatment at which time if he is cured, he will be released. When he is released, he relapses when traveling in a train, after a man refuses to stop drinking in the presence of ladies. He kills the man, hiding the crime from Nandhini as the credits start rolling.

Influences from S. Shankar's other popular films like Indian and Gentleman have been noted. The use of the time-slice method in the film, as with The Matrix films and earlier used by Shankar in his film Nayak, as well as the Farah Khan directed Main Hoon Na, proved popular with the audience. The Special Effects were provided by Big Freeze, a department based in London. Art Direction for the film was provided by Sabu Cyril. The movie Se7en is also said to be an influence as it too deals with a serial killer who punishes those who sin.

The film was simultaneously released in Tamil and Telugu (as Aparachitidu). Both versions were record breaking blockbusters. The film opened in 368 centers worldwide and grossed a stunning INR 5 million in its opening week and grossed Rs. 50 million in its first 50 days and eventually grossed INR 55 million. . It was later dubbed into Hindi as Aparachit - The Stranger which was a flop[1](it grossed just Rs 30 million). It also became the first Indian film to dubbed into French. The movie is also loosely based on Sidney Sheldon's Tell Me Your Dreams.

Anniyan received most (8 out of 15) of the South Indian Filmfare awards for 2006, breaking a new record in the Awards competition, it overshadowed its next counterparts, Chandramukhi (One Award) and Ghajini (Three Awards).

* The film has a sequence featuring the Thiruvaiyaar music festival. Well known exponents like Kunnakudi R Vaidhyanathan, Sudha Raghunathan and Unnikrishnan appear in the scene, which is a recreation of the real festival.

* The officers from Central Board of Film Certification (Censor Board) had personally congratulated the director Shankar for making a bold movie that speaks to the society in a grand way.

* Imported fighters as well as martial artists from all over the state were used in the multi-opponent fight scene.

* For the first time in Indian films the time-slicing technique used earlier in "The Matrix" was used for this film. Time-slicing is about numerous stills on a camera system consisting of 120 cameras, a special ring and precise control in post-production to achieve a frozen-time effect. This film used this for an action scene superbly choreographed by Peter Haynes.

* Vikram described his role in Anniyan as the most difficult one of his career.

* The first Indian movie to be dubbed into French. Columbia Tristar bought the dubbing rights for broadcast in French-speaking nations.

Anniyan is not the first work in Tamil to deal with MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder). Other stories that have MPD in their plot include

1. Manichitrathazhu (1993) - Malayalam Film.
2. Chandramukhi (2005) - Tamil remake of Manichitrathazhu.
3. Marmadesam (TV serial) (1997 - 1998)

Other films that portrayed characters with Psychiatric / Neurlogical Problems include

1. Ghajini (2005) - Short Term Memory Loss
2. Puthumai Pithan - Parthiban's movie

The story of Anniyan is loosely based on the novel Tell Me Your Dreams by Sidney Sheldon. But the theme of the movie is quiet different. He has adopted the fight scenes from the movie Matrix, story line from the novel "Tell me your dreams" and the punishment methods from Garuda Puranam(I think It might be the idea given by Sujatha(Writer)).His grand mother might have told him about Garuda Puranam to him(Sujatha).

The central character of the book is Ashley(Here in our case our central character is Anniyan(Vikram)). She is a workaholic. She suffers from a condition known as "Multiple Personality Disorder" or MPD due to the child abuse she faced when she was very young(In Anniyan Ambi's younger sister dies because of current leakage... so he get affected by MPD) . Toni and Alette(Anniyan and Remo) are her two "other" personalities. Toni(Anniyan) is the dominant of the two.

Ashley is an introvert and a workaholic. Toni is very outgoing and dynamic. She can sing and dance. Alette is a very innocent and shy girl. She is an excellent painter.

Toni is angry with Ashley as they are completely contrasting characters. She always criticizes her in front of Alette. Alette keeps calming Toni down every time. Toni hates Ashley. Allete is neutral. But Toni and Alette are friends.

Ashley's fears that somebody is following her are confirmed when somebody breaks into her house and writes on her looking glass with a lipstick, "You will die." She wants the police to escort her that night. The next morning, the police officer who is her escort is found dead in her apartment. Two murders precede this, which are not to be mentioned here. The vaginal secretions obtained are found to be of the same woman in all these murders. The lovers of Toni as well as Alette are murdered. One common thing all the murders have is the victims had sex before the murder with the woman who murdered them. Who's behind the serial murders?

This book delves into the much debated topic of multiple personality disorder or MPD.

In Annian, after interval at last there is a scene where Prakash raj and Vikram argues. After seeing the different personalities of Vikram(as Ambi and Anniyan) prakash raj says. You act like Shivaji ganesan. This dialogue appears as such in the novel "Tell me your dreams" but instead of Shivaji ganesan there appears "Oscar". I think this led to the failure of his movie Anniyan in Hindi(Aparachit). Even his movie Mudhalvan is a flop in Hindi(Nayak). Most of the Rajini movies are based on old James Bond movies. Even Vijaykanth did the same in one of his movie. He just copied some scenes from the movie Commando acted by Arnold(Seeing his daughter from Axe while cutting the logs). I think this is not new to Tamil industry. We can create a list of movies similar to this. That is why Tamil movies are not even Nominated for Academy awards(Oscar).Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, with no Front-Cover Texts, and with no Back-Cover Texts.
